The Client proposed to build a glass extension/conservatory to his existing ground floor apartment in a
Victorian terrace house in North London.
The idea of building this conservatory in structural glass was developed from this brief.
1. Two sheets of toughened and heat soaked
glass laminated together. Roof plate to be
2.60 x 4.20m long in one piece.
2. Glass beams consisting of 3No toughened
and heat soaked glass sheets laminated
together.
3. Two sheets of toughened and heat soaked
glass laminated with clear resin interlayer.
4. Roof surface to be treated with Ritech "clear
shield".
5. Stainless steel support brackets with counter
sunk bolts.
6. Low level water pond.
At a meeting of the Institute of Structure's award panel on 25th June 2004 it was agreed that an award be made to Fluid Structures for the above project. A special presentation was made on Wednesday 10th November 2004 and the award was accepted by David Crookes on behalf of Fluid Structures. For this structure the judges comments were; "Deceptively simple design" "A wonderful response to a demanding brief" "Demonstrating that exceptional engineering is immune to scale"
