Fluid Structures were engaged to work on the design of two large bookcases to be installed as the centrepiece of the Guardian newspaper’s visitor’s centre.
The bookcases are approximately 2 metres wide, almost 6 metres tall. They are fabricated in a mixture of laminated and toughened glass and are bonded together using structural adhesives and silicone.
At mezzanine level they also needed to be designed to act as balustrades and were subject to additional horizontal loads on the structure of the cases.
