The city centre site at Swindon was completely refurbished as part of Barclays flagship store rebranding programme. As part of this a new much more open and welcoming façade was created at street level in full height toughened structural glazing, giving uninterrupted views in and out of the store. Key aspects of the façade design were the large three metre high sliding doors. These have a significant effect on glazing wind loadings when open. In addition a new frameless glazed façade was installed to the first floor office space. This glass was required to form both the envelope of the building and resist internal balustrade loadings.
Fluid Structures worked with the specialist glazing contractor to develop a the most economical and robust configuration of glazing, closely integrated with the over-door brand signage and sliding door operator. At street level toughened glass was adopted throughout, with large cutouts for cash ATMs, whilst at first floor laminated toughened glass was used. Together these enabled the store designers' concept to be met and structurally provided the required degree of safety.
